| El
Campamento Diabetes Safari empieza en enero de cada año. Los
Campistas no observan los 5 meses de preparaciones, pero éstas son
muchas e intensas. |

Porque
casi no empleamos los carbohidratos (pan, tortilla, fruta, papas, pasta,
arroz) en el plan de alimentación, compramos lo mejor y más
fresco de las proteínas, grasas y verduras. |
| Campamento
Diabetes Safari begins in January of each year. The Campers are not
aware of the 5 months of preparations, but the preparations are many and
intense. |

Because
we hardly use carbohydrates (bread, tortillas, fruit, potatoes, pasta,
rice) in the food plan, we buy the best and freshest proteins, fats and
vegetables available. |

| Los
alimentos son céntricos y hasta críticos en la vida de una
persona con DM1. Como dicen los de la informática: Si
metemos basura en la máquina (el cuerpo humano), el producto de
la maquina será también basura. |

Las
instalaciones del Centro Vacacional Oaxtepec son idóneas para la
seguridad, la comodidad y el aprendizaje de los Campistas. Esta cabaña
es la más cerca del hotel en que dormimos y la utilizamos para todas
las comidas y para muchos eventos educativos, recreativos y paliativos. |
| Food
is central and even critical in the life of a person with DM1. Equally
applicable to the human body is the techies' saying that "Garbage in means
garbage out." |

The
facilities of the Centro Vacacional Oaxtepec are ideal for the safety,
comfort, and learning of the Campers. This cabaña is the one
closest to the hotel in which we sleep, so we utilize it for all meals
and for many educational, recreational, and reparative events. |

becomes headquarters for the Camp, and Staff prepares it so that the Campers
will feel and be welcomed.

control are available for the Campers. |

Campamento
Diabetes Safari exists for the children and adolescents who attend.
It belongs to them and, as Staff, we try to maintain awareness of their
needs and interests and the challenges that the Campers face every day. |

| Cada
Campista (y cada miembro del Staff) aprende en este Campamento. De
por sí, es educativo su propósito. La meta del Campamento
es proporcionar oportunidades para que los niños y adolescentes
con DM1 aprendan lo que quieran, lo que necesiten. Pero nadie les
va a decir QUE aprender, o COMO aprender, o CUANDO aprender, o QUE TANTO
aprender. Cada Campista es libre y responsable de su propio aprendizaje
y comportamiento en todo momento. |

Este
aprendizaje vital no es fácil ni rápidamente logrado.
Hay risas, sonrisas y sorpresas agradables, pero también hay lágrimas
y frustración y rebelión contra lo que parece (y bien puede
ser) injusto. El Campamento es una experiencia personal, individual
e individualizada. Igual que las dosis de insulina que varían
mucho de persona en persona, no es probable que dos Campistas aprendan
la MISMA lección con el MISMO contenido. |
| Each
Camper (and each member of Staff as well) learns something in this Camp.
In fact, its purpose is educational. Its aim is to provide opportunities
for children and adolescents with DM1 to learn whatever they wish and whatever
they need to learn about the management of DM1. But, as Staff, we
do not tell the Campers WHAT to learn, HOW to learn, WHEN to learn, or
HOW MUCH to learn. Each Camper is free to learn as he or she wishes,
and is responsible for her or his own learning and behavior at all times. |

This
vital learning is not easily or rapidly achieved. In the process,
there are smiles, laughter, and pleasant surprises, but there are also
tears and frustration and rebellion against what seems to be (and well
may be) unfair. Camp is a personal experience, individual and individualized.
Like their doses of insulin, which vary so much from one person to another,
it is not likely that any two Campers learn the SAME lesson or the SAME
information. |

melancolía nunca ajena a la DM1...el sentimiento de que hubo un
tiempo pasado más sencillo, más fácil, que hemos perdido,
y no sin tristeza. El deseo leve o absoluto de no poder ver directamente
o siempre claramente la realidad y el peso de lo que nos enfrenta.
La DM1 es una condición que de veras altera la senda de la vida. |

Unos
de los papeles del Staff es ser testigos de la seriedad, la madurez a una
edad joven, la necesidad de compartir lo casi incompartible. |

longing sadness, never far distanced from DM1...the feeling that there
was a time in the past that was simpler, easier, and that we have lost,
not without melancholy. The slight or absolute desire to not be able
to see directly or 100% clearly the weighty reality very much at hand.
DM1 is indeed a condition that alters life's course. |

of Staff's roles is to bear witness to the seriousness, the maturity at
an early age, the need to share what is almost unshareable. |

humana proporcionada por el sistema, sus integrantes y su dedicación

morning plenary session...a time to gather together all our parts, all
the elements of this temporary social system. The plenary sessions,
twice daily, are essential and empowering. They permit everyone to
be present in an integrated setting and to incorporate the sense of human
safety afforded by the system, its members, and its dedication to the task
of learning. |
